Estimating Labor And Materials For Ductwork Projects

Here are some basic steps describing how to accurately estimate ductwork projects. Start every project with a thorough review of specifications for the job and any special provisions or exclusions. Perform a detailed material takeoff marking each item to assure it has been included. Color coating systems items helps to deliniate work the scope of work. After all materials have been completed in the takeoff prepare a worksheet detailing all items in the takeoff for future review. The takeoff should be based on per piece calculations rather than per lb. calculations as a detailed takeoff will account for variations in the number of fitting and fitting types vs. straight ductwork and consequently the variation in labor cost required for the project. The per Lb. estimating approach will give you an idea of scope but will not provide the necessary accuracy required for a detailed labor and material cost estimate. After the takeoff is completed calculations for project based labor hour cost and per piece labor calculationsshould be detailed including factors for overhead cost, profit and factors for project contingency. Project contingency can vary from 5% to 15% based on risk factors and project provisions. After the detailed estimate is completed review work sheets to assure that all material items and labor calculations are correct and fall into line with industry standards and the comparison of like work performed previously.
