There are six important basic performance standards to start an estimate

Completeness is the first and most important goal for an accurate estimate. All items that are included in the project scope should be detailed including all accessory items which are integral parts that are furnished in accordance with standard industry practice. Watch out for end of bid factors such as permits, bonds and sales tax that may or may not be required in project scope.

Valid size ranges for items included in the project scope should be detailed for the most accurate basis for labor and and material cost. The broader the size range the greater risk for inaccuracy.

Quantities should be double checked to assure that poundage and accessory items are accurate. Scaling errors can lead to errors.

Labor Hours are the most difficult area to calculate and are the greatest risk for error in an estimate. Gaining accuracy with labor hours requires covering possible variances.

Pricing for raw materials and sub contracted labor should be detailed and qualified include standard pricing for smaller quantities and discounts for larger amounts.

Math errors are subtle and lead to greater error be sure to perform a disciplined check. Extensions and summations of columns on takeoff, extensions and summary recap sheets must be checked. A frequent error occurs in the transfer of figure totals.
