Interpreting Your Results

How Ductwork Labor and Material Are Calculated

There are three widely accepted methods for calculating ductwork labor: the hours per piece method, the hours per pound method, and the square feet per hour method used for specialty duct like PVC, FRP, fiberglass, and flex. This calculator uses labor values drawn from production labor studies, applied per foot for straight duct and per piece for fittings.

Labor. Each duct type and size carries a predetermined fabrication and installation labor value, indexed by stretchout (the flattened perimeter of the duct expressed in feet). A 24 by 12 duct, for example, has a stretchout of 6 feet. The calculator looks up the matching labor row and multiplies it by your footage for straight duct, or by your piece count for elbows.

Material. Material cost starts from surface area. Straight duct square footage is the stretchout in feet multiplied by the run length. A fitting’s square footage is derived from its stretchout and developed length. That square footage is converted to weight using the pounds per square foot for the gauge (0.906 for 26 gauge), then multiplied by your price per pound.

Together these give a labor and material figure you can cross check against your own historical numbers, which is exactly how experienced estimators validate a rate before trusting it.

Fabricating vs. Installing Ductwork Only

The calculator distinguishes between two situations, because they carry different labor.

Fabricating and installing. When your shop builds the duct and your crew hangs it, you incur both shop (fabrication) labor and field (installation) labor. Material is priced at your raw metal cost per pound, since you are buying coil and sheet rather than finished duct.

Installing only. When you buy duct pre-made and only hang it in the field, you incur installation labor alone. Fabrication hours and shop labor are excluded from the total.

Choosing the right mode matters, because fabrication can represent a substantial share of total labor on a rectangular duct job. Estimating both when you only install, or omitting shop time when you actually fabricate, is one of the most common ways a ductwork bid drifts off target.
